Barca Confirm Fab Interest

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has refused to rule out the possibility of trying to sign Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas but admits they may be priced out of a move for their former youth player.

“It depends on how much we want to spend. If we spend a lot of money it could be. We don’t know how much. We haven’t asked Arsenal. If we believe the value is excessive we won’t try,” he said, according to Marca, when asked directly about Fabregas.

He warned, however, that options are limited as improving the playing staff of the team that won the treble last term will not be an easy task.

“Don’t discount anyone, but improving what we have will be difficult,” said Begiristain.

“We encounter problems improving what we have, that is a reality. Improving a team that has won the treble is really difficult.”

Barcelona are reportedly interested in Ukrainian Dmytro Chygrynskiy of Shakhtar Donetsk as another option to bolster their squad, and Begiristain still hasn’t given up on signing Argentina captain Javier Mascherano from Liverpool.

“I don’t want to dismiss any of the players we like and we think will help us improve,” continued Begiristain.

“There are several options. We will see what the best option is and what the market offers.”

Begiristain acknowledged, too, that any potential signing would have to be met with the approval of the coaching staff.

“The opinion of Pep [Guardiola] is critical,” he said.
