Yuri Zhirkov and Joe Cole both have knee injuries, but the Russian is closing in on full fitness, unlike Cole – a long-term injury absentee.

Paulo Ferreira is also out as he has a knee problem of his own.

Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Carvalho, Cole; Mikel, Essien, Malouda, Lampard; Anelka, Drogba.

Hull City

Ian Ashbee, Jimmy Bullard and Richard Garcia will all be absent for Hull at Stamford Bridge.

But the likes of Stephen Hunt and Jozy Altidore are ready to make their Tigers debuts on the opening day.

Possible Starting XI (4-4-1-1): Duke, Mendy, Gardner, Turner, Dawson; Marney, Olofinjana, Boateng, Hunt; Geovanni; Altidore.

PREDICTION

Chelsea are quite rightly the co-favourites for the Premier League and much is expected of them under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Hull City face a real battle to avoid the drop, but any points they get from games like these can be considered a bonus.

For me this should be a comfortable enough victory for the Blues as the new season gets underway.
